He currently lives and works in the Netherlands. His artistic practice is rooted in personal narratives and research into themes such as identity, migration, colonial history, and spirituality. He creates paintings, installations, and textile works that reflect his life between different cultures. He often works with natural pigments and reused materials. This choice reflects how he views the world and his place within it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 &#091;&#093;\">R\u00e9gis studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and obtained a master\u2019s degree in Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam. His work has been shown in the Netherlands, Brazil, Ghana, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates. His artworks are held in various collections, including those of public institutions and hospitals. Alongside his artistic practice, he is active as a teacher and workshop facilitator. In this series R\u00e9gis Gon\u00e7alves explores what happens when social roles fall away and only the body and the gaze remain. What remains visible when title, function and social position no longer guide the way we look at someone?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p>By removing context, space is created for a different kind of encounter and our way of looking also changes. The artworks ask for an open way of looking and the willingness to be moved by what looking itself evokes. In this unsettling exhibition, R\u00e9gis Gon\u00e7alves reveals a hidden chapter of the city\u2019s past: the persecution of men accused of sodomy in the eighteenth century.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p>Between 1730 and 1810, hundreds of men disappeared into the basement cells of the Rasphuis. Far from public sight, imprisoned in so-called \u201csecret chambers.\u201d Through a series of powerful fictional portraits of men imprisoned for life, R\u00e9gis evokes a compelling image of forgotten queer history. The works in this exhibition were an ode to bloom, growth, and change. The title refers to a Roman spring festival in honor of Flora, the goddess of flowers and the new season. Like the festival itself, the exhibition was colorful and vibrant.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p>Where earlier exhibitions by R\u00e9gis were often socially charged, Floralia centered primarily on a sense of wonder. The exhibition did not ask for explanation but invited visitors to look and to feel. Those who lingered longer also perceived something fragile in the works. The flowers and portraits symbolized more than spring or celebration.
