Especially when the people behind those names were once deliberately removed from society. With <em>In Memoriam<\/em>, R\u00e9gis Gon\u00e7alves commemorates 142 men who were persecuted for sodomy in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries: 96 men who were executed and 46 who were sentenced to life imprisonment in Amsterdam\u2019s Rasphuis.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p>Their fate was part of a much wider persecution. Between 1730 and 1811, hundreds of sodomy cases were prosecuted in the Netherlands. Men could be banished, imprisoned or sentenced to death. The persecution did not take place only in courts and prisons. Until 1797, public executions were used as a deterrent, while stories about sodomites and their grim fate found their way into songs, pamphlets and other texts of the time.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p>R\u00e9gis came across the names of these 142 men while researching the persecution of men who had sexual relations with other men. The 46 men who were imprisoned for life in the Rasphuis had already been at the centre of his earlier exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/regisgoncalves.com\/en\/exhibitions\/inhabitants-of-the-secret-rooms-2025\/\">The Inhabitants of the Secret Chambers<\/a>. In the exhibition In Memoriam, he also includes the men who were sentenced to death.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p>R\u00e9gis sets their fate against that of Baron Frederik Adriaan van Reede van Renswoude. His name emerged during the sodomy persecutions, but his social position protected him from the fate suffered by others. In the portrait, R\u00e9gis uses white to represent a reputation that remained virtually untarnished despite the accusations.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"item-padd-mob section-text text-block \" ><div class=\"simple-text md\"><p>That inequality makes this history relevant today. Who is excluded when acceptance declines? And for whom are the consequences limited?
