About the artist

Régis Gonçalves

Régis Gonçalves was born in Brazil. He currently lives and works in the Netherlands. His artistic voice has been shaped by his personal experiences, gained while living and working in diverse countries and cultures. This international background has broadened his perspective and enriched his artistic themes, which is evident in his engagement with topics such as identity, migration, and cultural connection. In his multidisciplinary work, ranging from paintings to installations and textile objects, he explores themes such as memory, colonial history, spirituality, and connection to the earth.

He studied Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam. His work is both personal and universal: it often originates from autobiographical experiences but touches on themes that many recognize. His choice of materials is deliberate: Régis opts for sustainable, natural pigments and recycled fabrics, thereby also making a statement about ecology and social responsibility.

Régis’s works have been exhibited in institutions in the Netherlands, Brazil, Ghana, Portugal, and the United Arab Emirates. His work is held in collections including those of the Brazilian Embassy, the Amsterdam District Court, and various hospitals. He is also active as a teacher and supervisor of art workshops.

“My work is an invitation to look differently – at yourself, at others, and at the world.”

- Régis Gonçalves
