Café Noir 7 (2021)

From 28 May to 27 June 2021, Régis Gonçalves presented his exhibition Café Noir 7 at Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. After months of lockdowns and restrictions, the exhibition offered a welcome opportunity to experience art once again in a physical space. The presentation brought together visual art and performance in a setting reminiscent of a café where stories and encounters took centre stage.

Café Noir 7 was structured around the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. Each week focused on one sin, and with it the content of the exhibition shifted. Artworks were modified or expanded, and the conversations Gonçalves held with visitors took on a new perspective each time. Through this weekly transformation, the exhibition continued to evolve and became a living entity in which the audience was actively involved.

The exhibition offered space not only for visual reflection, but also for dialogue and exchange. After a long period in which museums and galleries were closed, Café Noir 7 felt like a relief: a place where people could once again gather, look and speak. The interaction between artist and visitor was central, turning each week into a new chapter in an ongoing conversation about human weaknesses, desires and the need for connection.
